RAINBOW HIGH
High school's
hard enough as it is without falling in love with your best friend -
who's sweet on the most popular guy in school. Or feeling like your
parents would throw you out if they knew you were gay. Or being afraid
of who you are... Meet three friends - the popular, good-looking Jock
Jason Carrillo with a beautiful girlfriend but still unsatisfied; the
friendly, easygoing, intellectual but confused Kyle Meeks; and the
independent, opinionated, defiant joker Nelson Glassman hopelessly in
love. Follow them through their second semester in Rainbow High.
INTO THIS WORLD WE'RE THROWN
Sequel
to Mark Kendrick's debut novel, Desert Sons.
While Desert Sons deftly handles the difficult and sometimes
dangerous coming out process of young lovers Ryan and Scott, the sequel
finds that lingering tensions remain, while new challenges continue to
surface. Infidelity, jealousy, town gossip, and buried feelings threaten
to destroy their relationship. Worse yet, the threat of violence looms
constantly in their lives.
Fans of Desert Sons will surely cherish this conclusion to its
story-lines. However, fans of gay teen "coming out" movies like
Beautiful Thing, Get Real, Boy's Life, and Edge of Seventeen will also
enjoy this book. In fact, Kendrick's first two novels would both make
great movies themselves!
THE YEAR OF ICE
I read this over the course of a bank holiday weekend - it was
immediately engaging and (sorry to be cliched) I really couldn't put it
down. Really well-written characters and an engaging story. It is set in
smallish-town America. The lead character is a young good-looking guy
finishing high school and heading off to college - gay but too afraid to
do anything much about it yet. The story concentrates on his
relationships with his philandering father, his hilarious Irish Aunt
Nora and his friends. Funny and touching. Give it a go!
DESERT SONS
Desert Sons is the story about the two boys Ryan
and Scott, both in their late teens, who meet when Ryan moves to live
with his uncle in Yucca Valley, Scott's home town. They are both
instantly attracted to each other, but neither dare to make a move. Ryan
is very closeted and in constant denial of his homosexuality, while
Scott is more down to earth with everything. After over a hundred pages
of hint-dropping from both sides, the boys *finally* (?) end up in bed
and they begin a strange relationship. They fight, because Ryan is so
closeted and Scott wants to come out, and between the fights they spend
their time in … bed. Or on the kitchen floor. Or in any other place that
might seem fitting. There are a lot of "I love you"s between these
intrigues, plus a little sweetness and Ryan's suspicious and unknown
past. The rest is basically...ehm... well, kitchen floors, tents, beds,
showers. You get the picture.
THE GEOGRAPHY CLUB
Geography club is a gentle and honest story about
a young man's struggle to find common ground, told in the unique but
identifiable first person voice of Russel Middlebrook.
I recommend this book to anyone who has ever been on the outside,
parts moved me to tears and at times it had me in stitches of laughter.
