Get Real!

Get Real! is a social group for people who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT) as well as their friends and family. The group, which meets every Tuesday, is led by its own members, so the activities and themes covered at the weekly meeting really do reflect what local people want.

Activities to-date have included quizzes, walks, trips to local places of interest and specific health talks, but we're always looking for new ideas, so your input would always be welcome!

The group had its inaugural meeting in May 2003 and was established by the recently formed South Tyneside LGBT Forum to celebrate the rich diversity of our area and to provide a safe, friendly, social environment for a part of our community that currently benefits from very few local services.

If you would like to learn more about Get Real! or come along to one of our meetings phone either Dave on 0191 416 2324 or Rob on 07811 990 424.

GPA Northumbria

The Northumbria branch of the GPA (Gay Police Association) offers an opportunity for gay, lesbian and bisexual police officers, special constables and police staff of Northumbria Police to network, mentor and offer assistance to each other.

The force recognises that every employee has a responsibility of respect for diversity and delivering equal opportunities.

A diversity policy called "dignity in action" operates and recognises that not every member of staff is heterosexual. To assist in the Force being an even fairer place to work, some members of Northumbria Police established a network called GALE (Gay & Lesbian Employee) in 2002 and in 2003 it was renamed GPA Northumbria.

The aims and objectives of GPA Northumbria are not to seek preferential treatment for gay, lesbian or bisexual staff, but to continue working towards:

  • The end/removal of harassment towards employees who are not heterosexual,
  • To offer assistance and advice on Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual issues to all staff regardless of rank or position
  • To offer networking and social opportunities for Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual staff within the Force.

GPA Northumbria has a formal link with GPA , the national Gay Police Association. In-force lesbian, gay and bisexual issues are discussed at a strategic level through the Diversity Development Group.

This is chaired by an Assistant Chief Constable (Management Services) and the GPA aims are supported by the Chief Officer (ACPO) team.
